As a regional center for Stem Cell Transplant, The Blood and Marrow Transplant Program of Cancer Centers of the Carolinas provides care for adult patients requiring autologous and matched-related allogeneic transplants. Stem cell transplantation is an aggressive therapy for patients with blood borne diseases such as leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma, as well as some solid tumors. The terms for bone marrow and stem cell transplant are often used interchangeably since the stem cells are derived from the bone marrow.

In 1992, the physicians and staff of Cancer Centers of the Carolinas brought stem cell transplants to the community, and by 2007, over 500 patients had successfully completed treatment with this technique. Cancer Centers of the Carolinas' overall survival and disease-free survival data tracks that of the national data banks.

The availability of a local stem cell transplant program allows our patients to stay closer to home and family support. The decreased stress on patients and their support systems helps to ease the inevitable strain of a serious illness and accompanying intensive treatment. It is our desire to meet the individual needs of each patient while empowering them and their caregivers to be active participants in the decision-making and healing process. Patients have access to state-of-the-art research through the National Institutes of Health Cooperative Group clinical trials, pharmaceutical trials and US Oncology Transplant studies.

The Blood and Marrow Transplant Program is accredited by the Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy (FACT) for autologous peripheral blood progenitor cell transplantation, including collection and processing. Our program was the first transplant program in South Carolina to receive this prestigious accreditation.

Cancer Centers of the Carolinas partners with St. Francis Hospital's Batson Cancer Care Center for inpatient transplant care and the Blood Connection for stem cell processing services.
