Greenville physician authors book about experiences in cancer care
Visit any bookstore, and you will undoubtedly find a large selection of books about dealing with cancer. A closer look will reveal that most of the selection includes accounts of patients’ or family members’ experiences of fighting the dreaded disease or volumes of technical information about cancer.
When Cancer Centers of the Carolinas physician Larry Puls, M.D. realized this, he decided it was time to write a book from a completely different point of view. The result is his new book, titled “The Other End of the Stethoscope,” which recounts experiences of fighting cancer from a medical professional’s point-of-view. It is a collection of true life tales of individual battles with different gynecologic malignancies as well as tales from resident education.
“I wrote the book because I felt like there is not much on the market that gives insight from the practitioner’s point of view,” said Puls. “Ultimately, I wrote it because I have been blessed in my career to have encountered so many wonderful patients, and some of the most interesting stories came from that. I also felt like it might have an impact, so people understand the struggles and joys that come with the territory of practicing.”
The 156-page, 16 chapter book features uplifting stories, sad tales and educational insights into physician training. It is available for purchase at www.lulu.com. It will also be available on Amazon.com in the coming weeks.
Puls is a gynecologic oncologist who practices at Cancer Centers of the Carolinas. He has been practicing medicine for more than 20 years and has lived and worked in Greenville, S.C. for 15 years.
