Cancer Centers of the Carolinas introduces PET/CT

Cancer Centers of the Carolinas Introduces PET/CT:
The Latest Advance in Diagnostic Imaging!

What is PET/CT?
Combining two industry-leading technologies, PET/CT registers and fuses two image data sets to form a single image that shows the anatomical location from CT, along with the metabolic activity of PET. PET/CT scans show the body’s physiologic changes, revealing tumors and tissue activity that are not captured by other diagnostic technologies, while simultaneously revealing the structure of the anatomy where the activity is taking place.

How is it used?
PET/CT’s integrated information can be used in the detection and localization of a variety of cancers, including breast, esophageal, cervical, melanoma, lymphoma, lung, colorectal, head and neck, and ovarian cancer.

What are the advantages of PET/CT?
·         Assists physicians in managing patient therapy through:
o        Increased diagnostic confidence
o        Enhanced capability to diagnose cancer at earlier stages, including recurrent cancers
o        Better definition of the stage of the tumor
o        Clearer assessment of response to treatments, such as chemotherapy or radiation therapy
·         May reduce the need for invasive procedures, such as biopsies and surgeries
·         May reduce biopsy sampling errors
·         May reduce the need for the number of tests a patient would need to undergo
